Frame & I-Beam 

The 20GN has a low profile bed and a pierced-beam frame. The I-Beam on the 20GN is 12-inches. A 12-inch I-Beam is standard in the trailer manufacturing business.


The flatbed on the 20GN is 102-inches. The floor has a 2-inch thickness, and it is made with treated wood. The treated wood is usually treated pine, but Douglas fir is available from the Big Tex manufacturing facility in Caldwell, Idaho.

Weight Specifics 

The 20GN has a gross vehicle weight rating of 20,000 pounds. The gross axle weight rating is 10,000 pounds (for each axle). The Big Tex Trailer team has certified engineers and technicians that have designed optimal trailers for maximum payloads and strength. This allows hotshot truckers to push their trailer to the limits with their heavy loads.

Dexter Axles 

There is two 10,000 dual wheel Dexter Axles on the Big Tex 20GN. They come standard with electric brakes. Each Dexter Axles can hold 10,000 pounds, and they are built to last. Drop Leg Jacks 

The 20GN has 12,000-pound drop leg jacks. The drop leg jacks are bolted on to the trailer, and they come with a greased handle. The drop leg jacks allow for an easier and smooth shift from each gear

Adjustable Coupler 

The 20GN has a crank-style adjustable coupler, and this helps stabilize the trailer. The 20GN has 2-5/16” ball adjustable coupler- square crank.


There is a multi-leaf slipper spring suspension on the Big Tex 20GN. The slipper leaf springs act as a part of the trailer’s suspension system. The spring will flex to resist shock and almost acts like a cushion. This ensures a safe haul for your cargo and a smooth ride.

Tie Down Pockets & Pipe Chain Spools 

The Big Tex 20GN has tie down pockets along the sides and are 24-inches in the center. The tie down pockets provides much better anchor points for attaching ropes, cords, and straps. That way hotshot truckers don’t have to tie equipment to the trailer’s side rails or greasy undercarriage.  

The 20GN has a 1-1/4-inch pipe chain spools between the tie down pockets. The pipe chain spools are round pieces of pipe added to the stake pockets for several reasons. Pipe chain spools give added support to the rub rails and lesson the problem of bending your rub rails. Pipe chain spools make it easier when you chain your load down.  It is obviously easier to run your chains around a smooth rolled surface rather than a sharp edge of a stake pocket causing the links of the chain to snag and lack in securement.

Safety Chains & Safety Hook Latches 

There are safety chains and safety hook latches on the Big Tex 20GN. The purpose of safety chains is to retain the connection between the towing vehicle and trailer in the event of separation of the trailer coupling from the ball or the ball from the trailer hitch, long enough to bring the vehicles to a stop. Hopefully, no hotshot trucker has to ever worry about this happening, but it great to know that your trailer is equipped for the event it does.

Side Bed Steps & Handles 

The Big Tex 20GN comes equipped with two side bed steps and handles. Hotshot truckers will obviously load their trailer, and they will check on their load. The two side steps (on each side of the trailer) allow hotshot truckers to get on and get off the bed of their trailer easier.

Rub Rails 

The Big Tex 20GN also has 3/8 inch heavy duty rub rails. Rub rails are valuable to your trailer. The rub rails are designed to “rub” against other objects (i.e. walls or highway barricades, etc.). This allows the rub rails to absorb impact and trauma. This protects the trailer from damage. The rub rails also protect the chains, straps, and ropes that are commonly used to secure cargo on the trailer.

Oil Bath Hubs 

The 20GN has oil bath hubs. Oil bath hubs are usually found on higher capacity axles, but it is up to the trailer manufacturer. Oil bath hubs use an oil cap that threads onto the end of the hub.

Modular Sealed Wiring Harness 

The wiring of the Big Tex 20GN is protected by a modular sealed wiring harness. There are various wires that allow the transfer of power for the lighting, as well as the auxiliary functions of the trailer, such as the electric trailer brake controller, backup lights, or power supply for a winch, or interior trailer lights.

If your gooseneck trailer is not equipped with a preformed wire harness, they can be susceptible to damage. When the wires of the trailer cannot function properly, you cannot use those auxiliary functions. This could be dangerous for you and other drivers on the road. The sealed wiring harness on the 20GN will protect that wiring.

Breakaway Kit 

The Big Tex 20GN comes standard with a complete breakaway kit and charger. The breakaway kit is designed to bring your trailer safely to a stop by activating its electric brakes if it becomes disconnect while being towed. A rechargeable battery is included so you never have to worry about the breakaway kit not being usable.


The 20GN comes with the LED lighting package. This ensures your trailer is well-lit and provides more visibility. The lighting is also protected with a grommet mount seal.

Radial Tires 

The 20GN comes with radial tires. Radial tires are usually standard in the trailer manufacturing industry. The radial tires are beneficial on hotshot trailers. They distribute the weight of the payload evenly, and it allows for improved stability while a hotshot trucker hauls larger loads. Radial tires also reduce rolling resistance. This will help improve fuel economy and it reduces the wearing on the tires. Radial tires also improve control and it helps with traction in inclement weather.


The steel on the 20GN is cleaned to ensure a professional, smooth finish. Then a superior quality is applied for a highly decorative and protective finish.

Dovetail & Ramps 

There is a 5-foot dovetail with a 5-foot double hinged spring assist flip-over ramps on the 20GN. The ramps make it easier to haul loads onto the trailer. You can use the dovetail to work on the trailer, as well.

The Big Tex 20GN Economy Tandem Dual Wheel Gooseneck is a great trailer. It does not come with a lot of features that you would expect it to come with. Big Tex’s Mega Ramps, a powder-coat finish, and a torque tube would all add so much to the trailer. These are also important features for hotshot truckers to have, but they are upgrades that will cost you extra money, or they are not offered by Big Tex. With that being said, it is a quality trailer and a great value. You can get one at a Big Tex dealer near you.
